About The Looking Back Project

We are a group of musicians and readers/actors from the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts who are interested in finding and performing unusual folk and composed popular music of the late 19th and and early 20th centuries.  Some of the areas of our interest are folk music of the British Isles, and their progeny in the Appalachians and other regions of the United States,  Yiddish folk songs and composed songs of the early 20th century, labor songs, songs about immigrants, World War I and anti-war songs, and songs about lost youth and the vicissitudes of life.

Our performers come together through many walks of life.  We are in our 50s, 60s, and 70s.  Our concerts are relaxed, funny and interesting, not too loud, and not too fast.  They are very pleasing to like-aged audiences and others.  The readings and memories that are interspersed with the songs relate to the music, and add much to the performances.  Each performance adds new repertoire, benefiting from the rich and diverse musical and intellectual talent that exists in the Hilltowns.
